Charger Thoughts from Edmonton.

August 8th 2008

What is up Confederation Nation! It’s been a long winter, spring, and summer, but finally its time to talk S.D.S.S.A.A. Football! November the 14th of this year will mark the 5th anniversary of Confed’s first championship, and celebration plans are already being made. However, rather than celebrate the past we want to look forward into the upcoming season. As with any high school or college program, the revolving four to five year window of eligibly will cost Confed some key players heading into this fall. Veteran Taylor Fish is optimistic. “We are going to suffer do to the loss of some seniors, but as always this gives new players the opportunity to shine.”

Starting Monday August 25th Confed will run two-a-days from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm to separate the men from the boys. While my own personal semi-annual “Sleep at the field the night before training camp starts” will not be taking place this year, I do have some sources who will give me the low down of how things are going at Charger Camp. As you all know, I would LOVE to be there, but I don’t fly home till the 29th.

Every year new players come and old ones go, but only time will tell if this years squad has what it takes to get it Confeds name back on the Copper Cliff Jewellers Trophy and beyond. “You can never tell how a team will play until they are together. you could have all the skill in the world but not mesh and you will never win a game.” adds Fish. He is right about that. Its not always the best team that wins it all, it’s the team that comes together and peaks at the right moment. There are many people, myself included, that believe the 2005 team that lost to Lockerby in the 2005 finals was a better team than that one that won it all in 2003. You’d also have a hard time finding people outside the Valley who believed on November 13th of 2003 that Confed was the best team in the league, or that they even had a chance against the undefeated LaSalle Lancers. But its not what people think, its what players, on the field, DO that determines who will be the Champions.
